Tomorrow Sandy and I will be off to the seaside for nearly a week, we’ll be staying in a hotel, it has a pool, we’ll eat fish and chips, sit in a theatre…
Oh, sorry, I should also mention that 30 other young people will be doing the same! Sadly for Sandy and I it won’t be the romantic weekend away we’ve always dreamed of, but in fact a very vital, important meeting in the life of the URC and URC Youth.
The General Assembly of the URC is a biennial meeting attended by various cohorts of the URC. Synod representatives, Moderators, Staff, Committee conveners and more! General Assembly is the highest decision-making body in our denomination and as such is a great opportunity for young people to have their say in the life of the church, not just for tomorrow, but for today as well. Whilst some items of business are long term and the work is ongoing rather than decisive, some decisions being made this weekend will have an instant impact on the URC. If you’d like to know more about the business tabled for this weekend, click here.
But General Assembly isn’t all about the business, it’s about fellowship, reinvigoration, inspiration and more. The Assembly includes Bible studies, worship and addresses from ecumenical guests from around the world, showing the rich and wide diversity of God’s church.
One part that is both connected and separate from General Assembly is the pre-Assembly event ‘What Do You Think?’. This is a fantastic and vital part of an Under-26’s Assembly as it helps prepare us for the business ahead. Familiarise ourselves with both how the Assembly works (in terms of voting, general etiquette etc.) and helps us understand, what can often be, complex language so that we understand all the details! Year after year feedback is always given on how well-informed and well-spoken the Under-26 representatives were, this is a testament to the usefulness of WDYT? ! As well as “analysing” the business, there is also plenty of time left for reflection, and socialising!
So for those of you who aren’t attending this week, I invite you to keep a track on both URC and URC Youth’s social media platforms, and continue to pray for us all as we discern God’s will for the URC.
